AKRON - Robert E. Cumberland, 73, of 13544 E. Ind. 114, Akron, died at 4:20 p.m. Nov.18, 2010, in Miller's Merry Manor, Warsaw.

He was born March 10, 1937, in Akron, to Vernon M. and Miriam Hudkins Cumberland. On Aug. 27, 1955, he married Sondra Taylor, who survives.

He owned and operated Cumberland Milk Transport for 33 years, and he and his wife co-owned the Freezer Fresh, Akron, for seven years. He graduated from Akron High School in 1955, where he played basketball all four years and was team captain. He was drafted in the military, serving in the U.S. Army from 1959-61. He was a member of Akron Lions Club and Akron United Methodist Church, where he was dedicated to caring for the church grounds as well as the church parsonage.

Also surviving are a daughter, Stacy (and spouse Jasen) Gibbens, Brazil, Ind.; two sons: Eric (and spouse Jamie) Cumberland, Akron, and Rob (and spouse Dee Dee) Cumberland, West Lafayette; a sister, Shirley (and spouse Max) Risner, Kissimmee, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a brother.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron, with the Rev. Mimi Tucker officiating. Burial will be in Akron Cemetery.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
