NAPPANEE – Robert D. Unger, 95, of Elkhart, and formerly of Nappanee, died of a sudden illness at 7:30 a.m. March 20, 2012, in the emergency room at Elkhart General Hospital.
He was born May 23, 1916, in Elkhart, to George and Irmyn Unger. On May 10, 1947, he married Donnabelle F. Farrington, who died Oct. 9, 2006.
He moved to Elkhart from Nappanee in 2004. He lived with his aunt Cora Wysong in Nappanee at the age of 12 following the death of his parents in a car accident.
He worked in factories and for Mutschler’s Brothers, Weatherhead, Syracuse; Bendix, South Bend; and Heckaman Homes, Nappanee. He served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines during World War II. He was a member of Nappanee American Legion.
Surviving are three sons: Bruce (and spouse Becky) Unger, Strongsville, Ohio; Blake (and spouse Marla) Unger, Elkhart; and Randall (and spouse Linda) Richmond, South Bend; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Cremation will follow. ***** Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or Nappanee American Legion.
