Robert D. “RD” Cole, 73, Lake Placid, Fla., and formerly of Pierceton, passed away at 10:23 p.m. Dec. 13, 2015, in his residence.
He was born Feb. 20, 1942, in Warsaw, to Alson and Maxine Cole.
He had been a resident of Kosciusko County until four years ago, moving to Lake Placid. He was a graduate of Pierceton High School, Class of 1960. He also earned the Eagle Scout Award in 1960, which was his desire to continue actively, to promote, support and apply Scouting ideals through service. He then joined the U.S. Army, which he honorably served in from 1960 to 1966 with the USAEUR – 7th Army, 24th Infantry Div., 2nd BG, 19th Infantry.
After returning home from the Army, he became owner of Past Time Bar, Pierceton, and then helped his brother farm until becoming a truck driver for Castle Metals, Franklin Park, Ill., until his retirement in 2008.
He was a life member of the National Eagle Scout Association as well as American Legion Post 258, Pierceton, where he served as post commander from 1981 to 1982 and American Legion 2nd District adjutant from 1982 to 1983. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 377, Pierceton, having held High Honor of Master in 2002; Mizpah Shrine, Fort Wayne; and Kosciusko County Shrine Club, Warsaw. He also was a member of Loyal Order of Moose of Lake Placid since 2013. He will be remembered by his family as a loving father, a great cook and a loyal friend.
Surviving are his daughter, Robin M. Cole, Warsaw; his son, Robert A. Cole, Lake Placid; two brothers, Dr. Larry (and spouse Cheryl Lynn) Cole, Marathon, Fla., and Yorktown, Ind.; and Terry (and spouse Cindy) Cole, Warsaw; two stepsons, Steve (and spouse Heather) Caudill, Troy, Ohio, and Brogan Kennedy, Claypool; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Military honors will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton, provided by American Legion Post 258, Pierceton. A Celebration of Life service will follow at noon at the Legion Post.
