NAPPANEE – Robert D. Hamman, 75, of Nappanee, died of natural causes July 27, 2012, in the emergency room at Elkhart General Hospital.

He was born Aug. 24, 1936, in Earl Park, to Dale K. and Vera P. Corbin Hamman. In 1958, he married Nancy Wilder, who survives.

He graduated from Kentland High School; St. Joseph College, Rensselaer; and got his master’s degree from Purdue University. He worked his entire life in the education field. In 1987, he moved to Nappanee where he was principal of Central Elementary School, and later served as principal at the Woodview Elementary School when it was built. He spent the last 10 years as a teacher in the Wakarusa Elementary School. Prior to moving to Nappanee, he taught school in Remington, Syracuse and   Laville Elementary. He attended Nappanee Missionary Church and was a former member of Nappanee Noon Kiwanis and Milford Christian Church, where he served as deacon. At St. Joseph College, he was an outstanding football player, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. His 1956 team was the co-national champions in the Aluminum Bowl.

Also surviving are five children: Timothy S. (and spouse Di) Hamman, Eastlake, Ohio; Kelly Sutton; Nappanee; Rodney D. (and spouse Sherrill) Hamman,  Mentone; Kina (Tom) Hinz, Plymouth; and Kela Hamman-Runnells (and Jimmy Faulkner), Warsaw; 13 grandchildren; and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a sister.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Nappanee Missionary Church Chapel. Cremation will follow.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.
