BOURBON – Richard L. Baney, 85, of Bourbon, passed away at 4:52 a.m. March 6, 2012, in Mason Health and Rehabilitation Center, Warsaw. He was in failing health.
He was born Nov. 3, 1926, in Fort Wayne, to Verl and Mary Koontz Baney. On Sept. 6, 1952, he married Betty Grimm, who survives.
He was a resident of Bourbon since 1953. He graduated from South Side High School, Fort Wayne, in 1945. He was drafted into the U.S. Army before his graduation ceremony and his family had to accept his diploma on his behalf. He served in the Philippines during World War II from 1945-46. He was known as a “baker.” He first started his baking career with Tastie Pastries, and then he was known for the famous “Eby Cookies” which were made right here in Bourbon and later baked for Amish Acres for more than 19 years. His favorite love was fishing with his buddies. He exercised by walking at least twice and sometimes three times a day around his small addition of Bourbon, caring for his flowers and enjoyed bowling. He was an avid sports fan and loved I.U. and Purdue sports. As a grandparent he loved his grandchildren and their activities as well. He was a member of several organizations that include: Bourbon American Legion Post 424, where he was past commander and past treasurer; Veterans of Foreign Wars; and a past member of the Plymouth Moose Lodge. He was a member of Bourbon First United Methodist Church.
Also surviving are two children, Cindy (and spouse Douglas) Greaf, Fort Wayne, and Kevin (and spouse Kimberley) Baney, Warsaw; grandchildren: Erica Subler, Haley Shelby, Ashley Herring and Taylor Baney; and a great-grandchild, Kira Herring. He was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Lee Johnson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St., Bourbon, with the Revs. Stormy Scherer-Berry and Mark Cottrill officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bourbon, with military graveside services by Bourbon American Legion.
