Richard G. 'Brownie' Brownell

Richard G. “Brownie” Brownell,  88, of Warsaw, passed away at 8 a.m. Oct. 29, 2011, in Mason Health Care & Rehabilitation, Warsaw.

He was born Jan. 2, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Horace and Edna  Brownell. He married Lorraine Andrew, who survives in Warsaw.

He lived in Kosciusko County since 1975 and was a World War II Navy veteran. He graduated from Hofstra University, Long Island, N.Y. Early in life he was an insurance salesman. He also worked for Leesburg Elevator as a general manager. He was a member of Saint Anne’s Episcopal Church, Warsaw, the American Kennel Club and many organizations. He volunteered for the Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County. In 1976 he was president of the town council “Mayor” of Leesburg. He enjoyed his politics, carpentry, dog breeding, soft coated Wheat Terriers, German Shepard and Irish Wolf Hounds. He was a lifetime animal enthusiast.

Also surviving are three sons: Richard Jr. (and spouse Cynthia) Brownell, Chappaqua, N.Y.; Craig (and spouse Toni) Metcalf, Columbia City; and Gary (and spouse Susan) Metcalf, Melbourne, Fla.; a daughter, Linda Jean Brownell, California; a sister, Peg Smith,  Winona Lake; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Mark E. Metcalf.

Services will be private at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, 2290 Provident Court, Warsaw, with Pastor Denny Bollenbacher officiating.
