FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Richard Claassen, 82, of Fort Pierce, Fla., died March 18, 2010, in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

He was born May 25, 1927, in Allison, Iowa. His wife, Lois Claassen, survives.

He was a resident of Fort Pierce since 1982, coming from Etna Green. He was a psychologist/social worker and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church; organized and led the Parkinson Support Group for the Treasure Coast; and was named volunteer of the year for St. Lucie and Martin counties in 1989.

Also surviving are a daughter, Dawn Marcine Purcell, Round Rock, Texas; two sons, Keith Alan Claassen, Etna Green, and James Michael Claassen, Fort Pierce; a sister, Dorothy Marienau, Muncie; a brother, Paul Claassen, Lynnwood, Wash; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son.

Haisley Funeral Home Chapel, Fort Pierce, was in charge of arrangements.
