AKRON – Rex D. Utter, 64, of 1013 N. CR 700E, Rochester, (Athens Area), died at 10:55 a.m. Dec. 12, 2011, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.

He was born March 16, 1947,  in Rochester, to Cedric D. and Betty J. Smythe Utter. On May 5, 1968, in Athens, he married Martha Hiers, who survives.

He worked for 44 years at Sonoco Products Co., in inside sales then moved to shipping supervisor. He was a 1965 graduate of Akron High School. He was a member of Akron Lions Club and served as lay leader and worked in the children’s ministries as well as all other capacities at Athens United Methodist Church for many years. He also worked as treasurer of the Athens Cemetery. He liked gardening and woodworking.

Also surviving are two daughters, Wendy (and spouse Michael) Wright, Rochester, and Amy Zavor, South Bend; a grandson, Michael James Wright; a foster granddaughter, Ariana; a sister, Peggy (and spouse  Michael) Walters, Rochester; several nieces and nephews; and his father-in-law, Richard C. Hiers, Akron. He was preceded in death by his parents,  Cedric and Betty Utter, and his mother-in-law, Wanda Heirs.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, with the Rev. Michael McFarland officiating. Burial will be in Athens Cemetery.

Calling is from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
