Community members, dignitaries and Warsaw Community Schools staff members attended a reception Monday to recognize former school superintendent Dr. Lee Harman.
Harman, who resigned Aug. 1 as superintendent, also was the recipient of several local and state honors and awards recognizing his 36 years in education.
State Senator Kent Adams, while reading a letter to Harman from Indiana Gov. O'Bannon, said Harman is greatly respected throughout the state for his intelligence, commitment, ability and hard work.
O'Bannon's letter said, in part, that as superintendent, Harman "continued to put student achievement first as evidenced by his statement 'keeping the main thing the main thing.'"
Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins presented Harman with an award from the city.
"I want to make sure everyone doesn't forget that Doc Harman is more than an educator - he is a valuable part of the community," Wiggins said.
Harman and his wife, Sue, also received lifetime passes for athletic events at Warsaw Community High School and, from U.S. Rep. Tim Roemer, a letter of appreciation and a flag that had flown in Harman's honor over the U.S. Capitol.
Craig Allebach, Warsaw school board president, read a board resolution in recognition and appreciation of Harman for his "dedication and meritorious service as teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent" and for his interest in the youth of the school district.
He also presented Harman with a plaque and with a Warsaw Community Schools watch.
Harman also received a letter from Dr. Suellen Reed, superintendent of public instruction with the Indiana Department of Education, along with a plaque as recipient of the Bell Ringer Award - "He rang the bell for education in Indiana."
After the reception and awards presentation, Harman said, "I'm pretty overwhelmed by the whole thing. It's just very nice to be the recipient of this kind of appreciation."
After Harman's resignation, former assistant superintendent Dr. David McGuire was named superintendent.
Harman, 57, is now working for Ball State University as assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership.
