Response To Glass

Editor, Times-Union:

Because my name appeared in David Glass' Sept. 17, 2007, letter, I decided to respond.

I'm pretty sure the state police would not have investigated if they didn't think it was warranted. They have more important things to do than be involved in what Mr. Glass has called harassment and a grudge.

As for the felony issue, someone can commit a crime and not be jailed unless or until they are arrested. Just because they are not in jail, doesn't mean the crime wasn't committed.

Brenda Wadkins has asked me to look at the records and verify what she has found before it's stated in a letter. I can confirm the statements are true. Having been involved in a number of audits, and knowing how exacting on compliance State Board of Accounts was in the past, I was shocked when the 2005-06 Audit had no findings on condition of records and payment of claims. There were other noncompliances that in the past would have been reported also.

Records show the clerk's salary per year as: 2004, $24,444; 2005, $24,444; 2006, $25,177; and 2007, $26,059. This totals $100,124 for four years and averages $25,031 per year.

Mrs. Glass was not just given the keys and told to "have at it." On my last day in office, she, Brenda and I went over a list of tasks to be done in the first month, including the date each should be done. Mrs. Glass asked if she could call if she had questions. Brenda and I both told her yes. I received maybe two or three calls from her. According to a tape of the Sept. 13, 2005, meeting, Mrs. Glass stated, even though I had a list of things to do, that doesn't mean I necessarily knew how to do them. I could have worked with Mrs. Glass for a while if she had asked, but she didn't and I wasn't aware she needed help. The computer programs are designed for utilities and towns and the instructions were there but the bottom line is, it's still basic bookkeeping.
