Kosciusko County residents who receive a phone call from a Montreal company that calls itself MAS should report it immediately, state officials said today.
According to a Warsaw resident, the company has called at least one older person in the area and told her a piece of her mail was delivered to them. They reportedly said they opened the mail and she had won $100,000; but to get the money through customs, they needed $1,700 from her.
The "company" had by this morning called the woman five times, but would not give her an address to send the money to until she told them she had taken the money out of the bank.
The person she spoke to also left a phone number: 514-862-0895. When the number is called, a recording answers: "This is the corporate office," and asks the caller to leave a name, phone number and "the representative you wish to speak to."
Kosciusko County Sheriff Al Rovenstine warned residents not to send money after receiving such a phone call. "Do not respond to any call of this sort," he said.
Anyone with questions or reports of similar phone calls should call the Indiana Attorney General's office at 800-382-5516.
