A Warsaw woman was hit in the face Monday night by a burglar looking for money.
According to the Warsaw Police Department, Barbara Elaine Grill, Country Club Terrace, Warsaw, was injured around midnight Monday during a struggle after she awoke to find an intruder in her home. She was hit in the face and lost two teeth.
The suspect escaped before police arrived, and nothing was believed to be stolen.
Police believe the man entered Grill's residence through an unlocked screen door.
The break-in is believed to be related to several residential burglaries in Warsaw, Winona Lake and throughout the county. In most cases, the break-ins occur between midnight and 3 a.m., when the residents are asleep. Purses, wallets and cash are usually the main items stolen.
No previous reports of a violent confrontation have been received by police, who said they have no suspects but are following several leads.
Warsaw police emphasized that residents should lock their doors and windows at night and take their keys, purses and wallets out of their vehicles, even if those vehicles are parked in a garage.
They also recommended turning off inside lights at night and leaving outside lights on. "Locks and lights are the order of the day," said Warsaw Mayor Jeff Plank, also a victim of a recent break-in. Police ask that any suspicious activity be reported immediately.
