Remonstrance Period Ends For Webster School Building Project

Posted

SYRACUSE -Ê"We're through the legal hurdles now," Wawasee School Superintendent Mark Stock told the Wawasee School Board Tuesday.

Stock was referring to the 30-day remonstration period which ended Friday over the construction of a new North Webster elementary school.

The new school will be built on the property Wawasee schools purchased for $322,092. The 68 acres, formerly owned by Joe Barrett and Richard Kistler, is at the intersection of CRs 750E and 600N, North Webster. The total size of the school building will be 106,226 square feet.

There was no remonstration, Stock said. He said the state tax control board was surprised there wasn't any because of the extensive project the school corporation has in mind.

On May 23, the architects, Barton, Coe, Vilamaa Architects & Engineers Inc., Fort Wayne, will present the school board with official drawings of the new North Webster Elementary. The board also will be officially asked to advertise for construction bids.

The new North Webster Elementary is only part of the work Wawasee Community School Corp. will be focusing on during the next few years. Once the North Webster project is going, improvement work will be done on Milford School, then Syracuse and then the high school.

In other business, the school board:

• Was told by Stock that Wawasee teacher Julie Baird has been awarded the Indiana German Teacher of the Year award. Her name will now be forwarded as a candidate for the state foreign language competition.

Wawasee High School Principal Alan Frank said, "She's just very, very deserving." She will be recognized in November, he said.

• Approved the employment of Bob Beer as the driver of bus 11 at Milford School.

• Approved the retirement of Garry Eyer, Syracuse Elementary custodian, effective June 30. Eyer was recognized at the support service banquet for 24 years of service to Wawasee Community School Corp.

• Approved the resignation of Gloria Starrett, Milford Middle School math teacher, as well as Ron Carmichael and Janis Engleberg.
