The Remnant Trust, a public educational foundation, is preparing for its community events busy season.
In preparation, it is more than doubling the featured items in its gallery for visitors to experience.
Kris Bex, president, The Remnant Trust, stated, “The gallery features selections from the first 300 items that contributed to the start of The Remnant Trust. This includes the first English translation of Aristotle’s Politics. It also includes a complete edition of Cato’s letters, which happens to be the only set in Indiana.”
Works such as Cato’s letters had a major impact on those who created the American form of government, but would you know when they were written?
Would you know who the author was (hint: not Cato)?
The community and region are invited to public exhibition events, May through October, to learn answers to these questions and experience the collection.
“During these events, we invite you to discuss the collection and ideas of liberty and dignity with our staff, our resident scholar (through July 2012) and OrthoWorx-Remnant Trust volunteer docents,” stated Bex.
David Floyd, CEO, OrthoWorx, stated, “We support community enrichment in partnership with The Remnant Trust and work with them to make The Trust’s one-of-a-kind collection available to the general public. It is a cultural and educational asset to our community, and we encourage those in our region to experience it.”
The public exhibits are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 19, June 9, June 30, Aug. 18 and Oct. 16.
Group tours are also available and can provide enhanced learning experiences.
Mark Norris, PhD, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Grace College, knows this firsthand.
“When I took my Grace College students to The Remnant Trust for my Renaissance and Reformation Class, they heard from visiting scholar David Baum about many of the books and people that we had studied that semester,” Norris said. “They were amazed that they could hold and read the original editions. Some stayed up to an hour after class. Today’s students seek authentic, interactive and transformational experiences.
“The Remnant Trust more than delivers,” stated Norris.
He also serves on the OrthoWorx-Remnant Trust Community Advisory Committee and serves as a volunteer docent at The Trust.

“Late this spring most pieces from our collection are returning to The Trust after being on loan to educational institutions. We are working with IPFW to establish an exhibit at their Fort Wayne campus. This is additional to our continued work with West Texas A&M University, Texas Tech University and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine,” stated Bex.
Additional community events are being planned and will be announced later this year.
