September 30 1990

    Gary Chen, a senior at Whitko High School, is a semi-finalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition. He is the son of Charles and Janet Chen, South Whitley.

Chen received 1500 out of a possible 1600 points in the math and verbal examination. Only one-half of one percent of the nation's graduate classes become National Merit semi-finalists. Chen is now eligible for one of 6,000 national scholarships totaling $25 million to be granted next spring.

    Bess Becker and Helen Miller took first place honors in the Rozella Ford 18-hole ladies group. Play of the day was blind partners. Other winners were: Mary Steele and Buthene Fuller, second; Carol Bess and Pauline Becker, third; Bernice Graham and Sally Eschback, fourth; Marilyn Gay and Jean Rickel, fifth.

September 30 1950

    Private First Class Barbara Hoppus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thurlow Hoppus, Winona Beach, has recently been transferred from Camp Stoneman, Calif., to Camp Roberts, Calif. Pfc. Hoppus has served 15 months in the WAC signal corps and has been made chief operator in the telephone system. She is now acting as signal corps officer.

September 30 1925

    A husking peg, at least 80 years old, was displayed at The Times office and thereby was laid claim to the record for that event by William Dahlem, Warsaw. The peg, made of copper with three finger rings, was used by his uncle in Ohio. When Dahlem was 10 years old, he is now 58, the peg was given to him. It shows light wear. Dahlem lived near Monoquet.
