    Councilman Bob Richmond wants the city to take a tough stance against pit bulls - a breed of dogs blamed for several maulings and deaths throughout the U.S. recently. The proposed amendment would require owners of the American pit bull terrier, or any other "potentially dangerous dog," to have insurance coverage of at least $300,000 for any injury, damage or loss caused by their dog.

    Math instructor Jerry Franks of Wawasee High School was assisting Mike Sumpter, who was one of 20 students in the math I class being trained in the use of the calculator. This is a new teaching program at the school.

Sept. 18 1947

    Mr. and Mrs. George Nye, Winona Lake, last week took a tour through lower Michigan, visiting several places along the east side of Lake Michigan and going as far north as Traverse City. Returning home, they commended the road system, and especially the pretty and numerous roadside parks.

    Did you see that big muskmelon in the show window of the Times office? It is of an unusually fine variety and weighs 12 pounds and 10 ounces, raised by Jacob Rathbun, who operates a farm just five miles east of Warsaw and also raised many melons this year.
