    SILVER LAKE - James A. Haney probably never thought that the pine tree he planted as a child would one day save his life.

Haney, 59, a Silver Lake native who is now a doctor in Idaho Falls, Idaho, is listed in serious condition in Fort Wayne after crashing his small plane in Silver Lake. His wife, Marilyn, 58, who is also originally from Silver Lake, is in fair condition.

    A local woman won two first place ribbons in the North Central Walking Horse Breeder's Futurity and Show held in Hastings, Mich.

Betty Hartman, Warsaw, won first place in the "Great Lakes Stallion Association Futurity" after showing her cold, "Wizard Of Nod." She also won first place in the mare and foal division with her horses, "Dolly Doll" and "Wizard Of Nod."

    Max Truex is continuing his winning ways for the University of Southern California.

A report from the Los Angeles Times, received here, tells of Max winning over 103 cross-country runners in the AAU Hill and Dale chase at Mt. San Antonio College.

October 6 1931

    The Indiana district conference of Brethren churches, which has been in session for three days at Mexico, Ind., closed with a missionary session. The conference was one of the largest for several years in the district.

At the morning session yesterday, the local Brethren minister, the Rev. E.M. Riddle, was elected moderator; F.C. Vanator, of Peru, vice moderator; and M.L. Sands, of Muncie, secretary and treasurer of the conference.
