    The annual Kosciusko County Fireman's Association banquet took place recently, and several area firefighters were recognized.

Jon Swoverland, assistant chief of the Warsaw Fire Department, was named 1993 Fireman of the Year, and Quinton Rupe Sr. of Winona Lake Volunteer Fire Department received the service award for the year.

    It was a record-breaking performance in an important game. When it was over, Tippecanoe Valley's Tim Alspaugh was a unanimous choice for the Times-Union's Backfield Player of the Week. Alspaugh's antics included 183-yards rushing, 27 yards in pass receptions, Valley's longest touchdown run ever on an 80-yard sprint on Valley's first offensive play, 27 defensive points including nine solo tackles and an interception.

    Patricia Scherer, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Scherer, of Silver Lake, is a majorette for Purdue University's marching band. She is one out of two freshmen chosen to be twirlers this year. A freshman this fall, Pat is majoring in Home Economics.

    Mr. and Mrs. Walter Long of Pierceton, Mr. and Mrs. John Motto of Winona Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Riggs of Etna Green and Herbert C. Lehman, Roscoe A. Trumbull and Orville Kilmer of Warsaw, will leave Tuesday for Havana, Cuba, where they will attend the 30th annual convention of United Spanish War veterans which convenes Oct. 7 to Oct. 12.
