    Army Spec. Gina S. Langone, daughter of Rex and Pam Culp, Nappanee, has graduated from the watercraft operator course at Fort Eustis, Newport News, Va.

The course provided instruction in marine deck duties, basic piloting and in-land rules of the road. Other training included ship structure, communications, emergency and lifesaving procedures, marlinespike seamanship, vessel operations and firefighting.

    Chuck Hartley accepted a certificate, pin, patch and a check from Times-Union assistant circulation manager after being named "Carrier of the Year." The honor was bestowed on the Jefferson Elementary School pupil as part of International Newspaper Carrier Day.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Hartley, Winona Lake.

    Beverly Tinkey is the new president of the Mentone chapter of Future Homemakers of America.

Other officers installed at a recent meeting are Diane Doyle, vice president; June Romine, secretary; Janet Romine, treasurer; Sue Blackburn, historian; Susan Doyle, parliamentarian; Rose Marie Drudge, reporter; and Barbara Longbreak, song leader.

    James Cretcher, of East Main Street, reports that he has a pear tree which bore two crops this season. From blooms which appeared on the tree in April he gathered a crop of 40 pears in September. From blooms which appeared in June he gathered two pears this month.
