Marine Cpls. Ian Conner and Todd Dawes and Marine Lance Cpls. James Hopkins and Jeffery Zellers recently completed a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian oceans with 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines.

Conner, Dawes, Hopkins and Zellers were among 2,200 Marines and 2,000 sailors in the four-ship USS Peleiu Amphibious Ready Group. They served three months off the coast of Somalia and helped evacuate U.S. citizens from Rwanda and Burundi.

An entire family will share Times-Union Carrier of the Year honors for 1979.

In conjunction with National Newspaper Week, Times-Union Circulation Manager Michael Case announced Eric, Cy and Wendy Ross, of Mentone, have been named Carriers of the Year.

October 13 1954

Eleanor Johnston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Johnston, of 612 S. Columbia St., served as chairman of the registration committee for the Northern Indiana Future Teachers of America education conference, held at Manchester College.

A junior, majoring in elementary education, Eleanor is also serving as state editor of the FTA magazine.
