    Anyone who is concerned over the quality of public education today might find their anxiety calmed by the example of a local elementary student.

Laine Gosney, 10, a bright, shy fifth-grader at Madison Elementary School, was awarded a plaque and a personal check for $2,500 Tuesday. Her school was given, in her honor, a plaque and a check for $10,000. Both awards were for Laine's winning essay in a contest sponsored by the Tylenol Brand Hot Ideas For Schools Awards Program.

    Mark Hampton, son of Kenneth and Bonnie Hampton, Warsaw, has been elected vice president of Cary Quadrangle at Purdue University. Cary, which houses 1,600 men, is the largest male dormitory in the United States.

Mark is a 1976 graduate of Warsaw Community High School, and is a junior at Purdue, majoring in Natural Resources and Environmental Science.

    Tom Joyner, Larry Mulcahy and Janet Foresman will be official delegates and Ray Heiman and Mary Ann Dumbar alternate delegates from the Warsaw High School speech department to the first session of the Indiana Forensic League Student Congress to be held at Peru Saturday.

Foresman, Joyner and Mulcahy will be voting members of the House of Representatives. The other two advanced speech students will take notes on proceedings.

    Robert Wesley Oborn, the eighteen-months-old son of Rev. George T. and Betty Oborn, recently received a check for six dollars as the fourth prize awarded by the Indiana State Fair Association in the "baby contest" held at the state fair in Indianapolis recently. The prize winner is the grandson of Rev. and Mrs. J. Wesley Oborn, East Center Street, Warsaw.
