    The Whitko High Art Department, serving as one of 37 units representing the United States, has received one silver medal and eight selected nominations for the 19th exhibition of World School Children's Art in the Republic of China Art competition.

The United States received two medals overall, a silver and a bronze, with Annette Tucker receiving the silver medal for her ink pen drawing titled "Forbidden Tree."

    Among the several paintings of retired Winona Lake postmaster, Phil Laurien, now on display at Kimm's Paint Store is "Where Did Everybody Go?" This same prize-winning work caused much favorable comment at the recent Village Art Festival at Nappanee.

Although Laurien has made sketches of favorite scenes for many years, he had never painted until after his 72nd birthday.

    A lesson on table setting was presented at the meeting of Brownie Troop No. 4, Wednesday afternoon at the East Ward school building. Mrs. Harold Derry is the adult leader of the troop. Three songs were sung by a group of four girls: Glendys Wagner, Jenny Lynn Carpenter, Susan Willits and Sharon Nagler.

    Forty-two expert asphalt workmen are expected here today or tomorrow from Plymouth, to begin work of laying or pouring the asphalt on the new East Market Street pavement. Mess shacks and bunk houses have been built on the golf links.

The entire crew will probably be located here until after Christmas before their work is completed.
