    The following individuals were the top bowlers at Gilliam Lanes for the month of October. John Nichols (men's high game, 279), Jan Godshalk (women's high series, 638), Kay Miner (women's high game, 243) and Glen Ransbottom Jr. (men's high game, 279, and high series 804).

    WEST LAFAYETTE - A 17-year-old Purdue University student has been nominated for an appointment at West Point Military Academy - and her name is Jill Johnston.

The pre-med major from Rochester is one of the first female candidates for the academy. She received one of 100 presidential nominations this year. Johnston, daughter of Lt. Col. and Mrs. Howard R. Johnston, is currently a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at Purdue.

    Elsworth Culver, Winona Lake, has arrived safely in Formosa, according to a cablegram received by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. C.P. Culver, of the Oriental Missionary Society. He is one of a team of five missionaries who flew from Los Angeles, Calif., via Tokyo to Formosa. They are conducting an evangelistic crusade on the island at the invitation of Madame Chiang Kai-Shek.
