    Stephen Slaughter, a sixth-grader from Warsaw Christian School, will compete at the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., May 20-21. Slaughter finished third out of 63 students from nine states at the Association of Christian Schools International Mid-America Regional April 8. The top four spellers at the regional advanced to the nationals.

    Seven members of the Warsaw Community High School band walked away with honors at awards ceremonies following the annual Spring Concert. Band members are Doug Harman, winner of the Director's Award; Kraig Doub, Conducting Award; Cherrill Smith, George E. Phillips Award; Alicia Felts and Julia Zimmerman, shared the Fitch Band Award; and sharing the top honor of the evening - the Anion Award - were Bill Wise and Greg Stevens.

    A/C Damon J. Frost Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Damon Frost Sr., South Indiana Street, was awarded the silver wings of an air force pilot during graduation ceremonies for members of Class 54-H of the USAF basic pilot school (multi-engine) at Reese AFB, Lubbock, Texas.

    Fred Mellencamp, up with the lark this morning, went out mushrooming. He failed to score until he ran across a "divining rod." Using this implement in front of him, just like a blind man crossing a street, Fred finally located 'em. He states he brought home a mess.
