    V. Edgar Stanley, the Rochester man honored for saving a baby from a burning home, gave a $2,500 reward he won to St. Francis College, Fort Wayne. The Carnegie Hero Fund commission honored Stanley after he crawled through thick smoke to rescue a 17-month-old boy who was sleeping. He is chairman of the board of Counting House Bank. < 218>25 Years Ago Two Talma Junior High School students were given special recognition by the < 202>Times-Union< 217> and WRSW for their scholastic achievements. Ryan Williams received an award in mathematics and Terry Snipes, English.

May 27 1947

    Retired U.S. army officer, Col. Thearl Essig and wife, reported bound for old home town here and to arrive sometime next week. The Essigs have been living in Houston, Texas, where the colonel supervised construction of a private 18-hole golf course. The colonel is no mean "chump" at golf himself.

May 27 1922

    A 50-pound watermelon was the piece de resistance served at the D. E. Smith home, South Union Street, Sunday. Mr. Smith spent the winter in the south at Florida. While there he raised a large garden, planting some watermelons.
