    A letter written locally to Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev may soon be published in a book. Chad Curtis wrote to the Soviet leader months ago expressing concern about the recent earthquake and wishes for global harmony.

Conglomerate Publishing Ltd., acquired a copy of all the correspondence to Gorbachev from the United States, and is assembling a book listing the letters. The book is tentatively titled "Dear Mr. Gorbachev."

    Although most college students will stay on their respective campuses this spring, a Claypool student attending Goshen College will travel thousands of miles between now and August.

Pamela Piper, a junior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V. Ray Piper, Rt. 2, Claypool, is in Honduras. She is enrolled in a study-service trimester program at Goshen College where students have an opportunity to live in one of five countries for 14 weeks.

    Jerry Turner, popular 18-year-old Warsaw High School senior, will represent this city in the All-American table tennis championships in Chicago. Jerry won the right to compete in the national event by eliminating all contenders for the Warsaw crown in a recent tournament.

Jerry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cy Turner, South Hickory Street.

    Malcolm Shane, son of Mr. and Mrs. Silas Shane, of this city, and student at Illinois University, Champaign, Ill., has received the honor of being the best fencer of the college and has been made a member of the varsity team. He recently eliminated 50 men in a fencing match.
