    First- and second-place winners of this year's Syracuse Spelling Bee are fifth- and sixth-grade runner-up, Matt Stoll; seventh- and eighth-grade runner-up Carrie Schmahl; fifth- and sixth-grade winner Andrew Bartlett; and overall winner Cindy Cobbum.

    Richard Sisk was recently promoted to superintendent of mails at the Warsaw Post Office. Mike Kennedy was promoted as foreman of mails. Sisk has worked at the local office since 1959 and Kennedy since 1965.

    It was 16 years ago (Feb. 25, 1932) when Tom Walter, veteran Warsaw druggist, came to this city from Auburn to open his first drug store. He made an outright purchase of the drug store then owned and operated by Hugh Wood and located at 110 E. Center St., the firm's present location. It was in the drab Depression days. "We took in exactly $6.93 our opening day in Warsaw," Tom said.

    Motor driven school hacks have been replaced by horse-drawn vehicles because of the bad conditions of roads in many parts of Kosciusko County.
