    SYRACUSE - Erin Mort, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tristan Mort, Syracuse, has been selected as a National Merit Scholarship finalist. Only one-half of one percent of all U.S. high school seniors attain this honor.

Mort is spending the semester at the University of Southern California in the Resident Honors Program. She will return to graduate in June from Wawasee High School.

    Patty Braman, Kosciusko County home extension agent and a resident of Warsaw, was chosen Young Careerist from a field of competitors in Business and Professional Women's Club District III.

Braman represented the Warsaw BPW club in the contest Feb. 25 at the spring District III meeting in Elkhart.

    Pfc. John N. Hepler, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hepler, near Bourbon, is the marine whose outstanding heroism under enemy fire was reported by the United Press in a special story from Korea a short time ago.

A wireman for A Company, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Hepler saved three wounded comrades by dragging and carrying them to safety out of no man's land on the western front. John is believed to be stationed near Panmunjom.

    NORTH MANCHESTER - Twenty years ago Mrs. Luther Brubaker, living near here stepped on a needle and it broke in a great toe. This week she investigated a black spot on the toe and removed the remainder of the needle, about three-quarters of its length.
