Ruth Johnson, an English as a Second Language student with Adult Basic Education, has recently received her American citizenship. Johnson's native language is Portuguese. She began studying English with tutor Karen Thomas in 1986 after moving here from Brazil with her husband, Jim. During the past three years, Johnson has progressed from knowing no English to learning the skills necessary to obtain the citizenship test.
Hollis Earnhart, Rt. 1, Pierceton, was recently honored by his fellow men of the Pierceton fire department in recognition of 30 years as a volunteer fireman. Upon retirement at the end of 1974, Earnhart was given an engraved wrist watch. Fire Chief Merritt Hyndman presented the award.
Wilma L. Gaddis, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Tilden H. Gaddis, Winona Lake, entered the Jewish Hospital School of Nursing, in Cincinnati, this week for a three-year course in professional nursing.
A resident of Warsaw for 77 years, all but the first three weeks of her life, is the distinction of Nancy Walters, widow of the late J.H. "Hank" Walters, of this city, who on March 2 quietly celebrated her 77th birthday. Walters is in good health and very active despite her years. She has seen Warsaw grow from a settlement of a few scattering homes and probably remembers more Warsawans than any living resident now. Civil War days she recalls most distinctly.
