    INDIANAPOLIS - Michael Lewis of Jasper and Kevin Ault of Warsaw, the two state's top scorers and two of the leading candidates for Mr. Basketball, head the 1996 Associated Press boys' All-State team announced today.

Lewis and Ault tied with the most votes from an AP All-State selection panel of sports writers and broadcasters.

    Air Force Sgt. Steven M. Vogel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ned V. Vogel, Warsaw, has participated in Global Shield 81, the Strategic Air Command's response to a simulated attack on the United States.

The service member is among the more than 100,000 U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Canadian personnel taking part in SAC's largest, no-notice, 20-day training exercise.

    Larry Mock and Jay Brouwer have been named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of the 1956 Syracuse graduating class. Larry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Mock. Jay is the son of Mrs. Orrin Smith, Lake Wawasee.

March 27 1931

    ROCHESTER - Mr. and Mrs. William Chilton, 85 and 83 respectively, who make their home with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Chilton and their grandson, Buston, 14, escaped death when their home was destroyed by fire.

Only Buston was home at the time of the fire. His parents were visiting relatives in the southern part of the state. He was awakened by the flames, but when he attempted to reach his grandparents, who were upstairs, he found the stairway in flames. He succeeded in placing a ladder to a window and carried them to safety.
