    Lakeview Middle School science teacher Mark McCollom has been named Conservation District Teacher of the Year for his efforts in outdoor eduction.

McCollom, who is in his second year at Lakeview, received the annual award from the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District.

    South Whitley's Julie and Joni Kurtz each received a gold loving cup after winning the county spelling bees. Julie won the fifth and sixth grade division crown, and her sister, Joni, was the winner of the junior high spelling bee.

They are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kurtz, South Whitley. The cup is awarded by The Time-Union and Radio Stations WRSW AM-FM. It will be an all-family affair as they compete with each other for the overall county title.

    Two local students at Bob Jones University, Billie June Mikesell and Edwin Cashman, Winona Lake, have been named on the dean's honor list, it was reported by the school news bureau.

Billie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Mikesell, and Edwin is the son of the Rev. and Mrs. A.D. Cashman.

    Tryouts for the Discussion League Contest were held at Warsaw High School. Vernon VanDyke won and will represent Warsaw at the county contest to be held in the near future. This contest is sponsored by Indiana University and will be carried on until a winner over the state is decided. Other contestants were Ray Dederick, Mary Rippey and Sybill Satterlee.
