Northwood High School's senior Sarah L. Besson has met the requirements for finalists standing in the 1987 National Merit Scholarship Program. This honor places her in a very select group representing fewer than half of one percent of American high school seniors.
Fourth grade students at Leesburg Elementary School are learning to spell under a new method, using a tape recorder and headphones. The children can proceed with their spelling lesson without interfering with the other students. Lessons other than spelling are also taped. This new learning method is fascinating to the students and is being used in many schools.
Police warned today that a ban against gambling devices in stores and other establishments remains in force in Marshall County. The warning came following the discovery of a punch board in a filling station. Punch boards and pinball machines were banned in Marshall county five years ago after a drive by former sheriff Frank Martin.
Lewis Perry of Mishawaka, formerly of Bourbon, was arrested by officer Earl Burwell on a charge of speeding his automobile in this city and was later fined $1 and costs, in all $11, by Mayor John A. Sloane. Perry is alleged to have operated his car at a rate of at least 20 miles an hour over Center Street from Lake Street to Indiana Street. Officer Burwell took possession of Perry's automobile, placing it in the garage until the case was disposed of.
