    Gene Hughes of Mentone has been published in "Best Poems of 1996," an anthology compiled by The National Library of Poetry.

Hughes also was given an Editor's Choice award for being in the top 3 percent of poems selected.

June 5 1981

    ATWOOD - One of the oldest buildings and the only restaurant in Atwood - the Atwood Cafe - was extensively damaged by fire early today.

Fire damage on the first floor, as well as smoke and water damage throughout the structure, was estimated at $30,000 by Sheriff C. Alan Rovenstine, owner of the building.

June 5 1956

    Four members of the Manchester College basketball squad, including two Kosciusko County young men, have been named on the Hoosier College all-conference team by coaches of the seven-member schools.

Chosen were Donnie Butts, third baseman from Beaver Dam; Tom Miller, catcher from Middlebury; Dick Jordan, pitcher from Indianapolis; and Gene Likens, outfield from Sidney. All are seniors except Likens, a junior.

    Doris Arnold of Warsaw is one of the Butler University co-eds who will serve at the banquet for President Hoover in Indianapolis June 15, which is being given under the sponsorship of the Indiana Republican Editorial Association. James Makin, director of the Butler cafeteria, is in charge of feeding the 5,000 guests who are expected to attend the affair.
