Wawasee captured the state title in the third annual Indiana High School Girls' Track and Field championship at North Central in Indianapolis last night.

It took only 30 points to win the girls' team title and outstanding sophomore Lorene Spearman tallied them all for the Warriors of Coach Marcia Carpenter. Spearman won the 100 in a meet record of :10.7 and recorded a remarkable :23.9 in the 220. The latter clocking bettered the listed national prep record of :24 seconds set by Gwen Smith of Conroe, Texas, in 1975. Wawasee's 440 relay team was clocked in at a new state meet record time of :49.2. The other runners for the Warriors were Kathy Bice, Barb Brouwer and Barb Yoder.

As a graduation present Priscilla Matthews, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Matthews, received a rare gift.

The gift came from George Grassberger, a dealer in rare books in Philadelphia. It was a copy of Oliver Wendell Holmes' "The Iron Gate and Other Poems," and was autographed by the author in 1880, the year it was printed. The book also contains a copy of an old book plate engraved in 1509, which Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author, in his later career, had adopted in his works.
