Matt Harman, a student at Warsaw Community High School, recently won a first-place prize in the annual statewide High School Essay Contest, sponsored by the Indiana Committee for the Humanities and the Indiana Teachers of Writing. Warsaw Community High School also had several honorable mention winners, including seniors Marti McConnell and Nikki Refior, and sophomores Karla Homburg and Cari Howie.
Warren D. Walmer, president of Walmer Supply, Inc., Warsaw, has been appointed to membership in the Dodge Advisory Panel, a newly formed national group of construction industry businessmen. Walmer becomes one of 1,000 members of the 1973-74 advisory panel, formed by the F.W. Dodge Division of McGraw-Hill Information Systems Co.
Mrs. Almon (Alee) Garard, Warsaw artist, has been invited to present the one-man opening show at the Hoosier salon galleries in the State Life Building, Indianapolis, the last two weeks in September. Mrs. Garard will show 20 of her paintings in this show. She recently returned from Florida, having spent the winter there. While there she won first place in an art show, exhibiting a Miami scene.
Grave fears are expressed by farmers in whose oats a yellow blight has made its appearance during the last week. Ground elevation seems to make little or no difference in the ravages of the disease. The forepart of the week farmers who noticed the dried up and yellow oat blades entertained the idea that the hot weather was the cause, but following the rains of the mid-week, the conditions continued to grow worse instead of improving.
