    Five Warsaw Community High School juniors were recently recognized as Purdue University Junior Scholars. The students, who were nominated by academic department heads at WCHS, were chosen based on exemplary academic talent and promise in a given academic area. Certificates were presented to Kathleen Anderson, who received the English award; Zeb Stevenson, foreign language; Brad Aust, mathematics; Todd Hofstra, science; and Shawn Whitaker, social studies.

    Lorene Spearman is all smiles as she is flanked by her father, Bob, and mother, June, after winning the state Mental Attitude Award for girls' track. Spearman is the second Wawasee girl so honored, joining Jennifer Cox, who won the honor in gymnastics in 1976.

June 10 1953

    Ruth Ann Nine, sophomore at Purdue and a former 4-H member of North Webster and Kosciusko County, won the State International Farm Youth Exchange fund raising campaign award.

Nine was leader of the Fort Wayne district, which raised $579 to send the former 4-H'ers to Europe this year and also helped raise the $92.85 in Kosciusko County. She received a desk fountain pen set.

    Vere Sutherlin, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Sutherlin, West Center Street, was elected captain of the 1938 DePauw track team at a banquet given by Coach Buckheit Friday night. He is a junior and has been a regular on the track squad for the past two seasons.
