    Jonathan Ummel, son of Dallas Ummel and Susan Clark, was named valedictorian of the class of 1996 at Wawasee High School.

Natalie Rabb is the salutatorian. She is the daughter of James Rabb and Ann Pinnick.

June 1 1980

    Warsaw's 1,600-meter relay team erased more than two seconds from its school-record clocking with a 3:18.1 performance in finishing fifth in Saturday's state track meet. Members of the foursome are, Troy Furnival, Jeff Nock, Eric Sebo and Dave Harman.

June 1 1955

    Jack N. Powell, who operates the general store at Clunette, has been granted a patent on a self-opening cap for beer and soda pop bottles.

Powell, who is 26 years of age, operates the Clunette store with his wife. He said that his next effort will be to find a beverage company to manufacture the bottle cap.

75 Years Ago

June 1 1930

    A queer-looking bird was caught on the Erie Madlem farm near Akron. The bird looks somewhat like an owl except in its face which resembles that of a monkey. The bird is white and measures 42 inches from tip to tip of the wings.
