    It was a record-setting day Saturday during the Pioneer Days Road Race in Warsaw.

Mark Furkis (9:24) and Christi Barlow (12:26) both set new course records in racing to victory as the top male and female runners in the 19th annual event.

    Three teachers have been hired to complete the faculty rostrum at Lakeland Christian Academy. Joining the staff are Ann Wharton in English, Vicki Rife in Spanish, English, geography and home economics and Cheryl Burtoft in junior high math, geometry and typing.

    Capt. Thomas Eaton, Silver Lake, commanding officer of Company L. local national guard unit, today announced promotions for seven men and the appointment of 1st. Lt. John R. Bayne, Winona Lake, as executive officer, succeeding 1st Lt. Jack Dobbins.

Those promoted were: Leon Juday, Silver Lake, from sergeant to sergeant first class; Robert Hoppus, Paul Kinsey and Fred Lozier, Warsaw, from corporal to sergeant; Robert Smiley west of Warsaw, from private first class to corporal; Dayle Gunter, Claypool, and Arthur Taylor, Warsaw, from private to private first class.

    Fish are biting around Warsaw lakes now report local anglers.

Yesterday Merl McGlennon, artful angler of this city, landed 10 large crappies which weighed an average of 1-1/2 pounds each.
