    Three area athletes received awards for their efforts in Saturday's Tournament of Knights competition, part of the North Webster Mermaid Festival. Beating out four others for the top award was Troy Slone of Ligonier; second was Travis Reiff of North Webster, while Eric Beer of Milford was third.

July 3 1972

    Barring any unforeseen difficulties, Warsaw's long-awaited dream - the opening of the U.S. 30 bypass - will come true on Aug. 4. The state highway commission has set that date for the opening to traffic the final 4.5-mile segment of the new pavement.

July 3 1947

    Carla Rene Perry, attractive 16-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Perry, 115 N. Lake Street, was chosen Queen of the Lakes at the Mermaid Festival. The popular high school artist won out over 12 other pretty contestants and was crowned by Lt. Gov. Richard James.

    A total of 197 eighth-grade pupils will be graduated into the high schools of Kosciusko County at the annual commencement exercises to be conducted at the Tabernacle in Winona Lake Saturday afternoon.
