One of the first Indiana state automobile license plates ever issued, a round metal disk slightly larger than a silver dollar issued probably in the year 1905 is in possession of E.W. Showalter, of Claypool. Showalter purchased it in 1905, the first year that the state required auto licenses and at a time when there were very few autos in use in this state. The number on the tag is 1978. The disk was perforated in four places for tacks and was nailed to the wooden part of the side of the auto seat.
