    Shawn Morton of Warsaw captured a pair of first-place finishes in late model racing action to lead area race car drivers in action Saturday at the New Paris Speedway.

Bob Schisler of Syracuse finished second in street stock racing action while Warsaw's Bob Johnson also brought home a second-place effort.

    MUNCIE - High school journalists received 50 awards at the close of the second of four weeks of Ball State University's recent 11th annual Journalism Workshop.

Local award winners included Janet Ratliff and Kathy Rantz, both students at Whitko High School. Ratliff won an award for layout and design, and Rantz won an honorable mention as most improved editorial management student.

    J. Edward Hawk, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hawk, of East Market Street, and Jerry Fancil, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fancil, of East Winona Avenue, will be among the contestants Sunday in the soap box derby at Fort Wayne.

Both cars passed final inspection Thursday. Hawk's car, "Rocket 88," is sponsored by McKown's garage, and Fancil's car is sponsored by his father.

    Carl Hathaway, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.D. Hathaway, of this city, superintendent of the winter quarters of the Ringling Brothers circus at Bridgeport, Conn., is now acting manager of the show. The circus carries 43 elephants, the largest number ever transported by the show.
