    City hall got one of those appreciative compliments recently. It seems Warsaw police office Steve Rockey made an extra effort to help a stranded motorist fix a flat tire on U.S. 30.

The motorist resides in Indianapolis and contacted mayor Jeff Plank with a thank-you note.

July 25 1978

    Deborah Schaeffer, of Silver Lake, was chosen "Cutie Queen" and Brent Comer, Hoagland, "Cutie King" during Silver Lake Days parade Saturday. Kelli Jo Zile, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Zile, Silver Lake, was first place winner during the pet parade held Friday night. Kelli, dressed as "Little Bo Peep," pulled a wagon with six puppies covered with cotton to make then look like sheep.

July 25 1953

    Mrs. Alma Porter, Winona Lake, won a gold medal for her original oration, "Victory Through Kindness," delivered at the music temple, Winona Lake, during the county WCTU speech contest.

Others participating were Mrs. Donald Quine, Mrs. Arthur Upson and Mrs. George Taylor, Winona Lake, and Mrs.George Fidler, North Webster.

    Returning from a little errand at town July 23, John Mathews of near Palestine was most pleasantly surprised to find a number of his school mates and other friends gathering to help him celebrate his 16th birthday anniversary. Those present were: his brother and sister, George and Doris Mathews, Wilson Weirick, Virgil Shirey, Harold Parks, Gerald Boggess, Marshall Goodman, Fred Beeson, Walter Barkman, Donald Emmons, Evelyn Catton, John, George and Doris Mathews, Mrs. Charles Robbins and daughters, Mary Ann, Marjorie and Patricia, Mrs. Rosella Mathews (John's grandmother), and Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Mathews.
