    Jerry Williams raced to the top spot in the men's competition while Krista Ross outdistanced the women's field in winning the 17th annual Pioneer Days Road Race Saturday.

Williams captured the overall top spot for the men with a winning effort of 9:54 in the two-mile race. Ross, in winning the women's overall title, completed the course with a top time of 12:42.

    Contestants for the fair queen title entered the umbrella judging as part of the Pioneer Day parade and activities Saturday. The fair queen contest is sponsored by the two chapters of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. The winners in the umbrella judging were Twila Cotner, Miss Atwood, first; Martha Dalton, Miss Warsaw II, second; and Susie Riner, Miss Mentone, third.

    Jo Ann Tucker and Marilyn Horn gave demonstrations at a recent meeting of the Franklin 49'ers 4-H club at the home of Sandra Ballenger.

Tucker demonstrated on corn bread and Horn on red chocolate cake.

    Warsaw and Winona Lake on July 21, the hottest day in the year, consumed 610,526 gallons of water, according to C.R. Weiss, superintendent of the Interstate pumping station at Center Lake.

Weiss said the normal consumption of water would be approximately 350,000 gallons.
