Rodney Shepherd, son of Palmer and Phyllis Shepherd, Route 2, Claypool, recently showed the grand champion Shorthorn steer at the Michigan Junior Shorthorn Association Preview Show in Ithica, Mich. Premium for the title was a trophy, rosette and $500.
Cindy Nifong, 17, who will wear the banner of Miss Etna Green during this year's Kosciusko County fair queen activities, captured top honors in umbrella competition.
George Nye, our county surveyor and history enthusiast, writes: "In going through some old papers given to me by Clark Holbrook, we find some interesting old receipts. A tax receipt dated Dec. 25, 1850, and signed by William Williams as county treasurer, is one of the papers. It was issued to Amariah W. Holbook in payment for taxes due in 1849 in which the total amount for one installment of 200 acres was $3.49." Holbrook then owned real estate in Wayne Township, east of Winona Lake.
On the farm of Andrew Armbuster, 1-1/2 miles northwest of Syracuse, stands an apple tree which measures 13 feet and 10-1/2 inches in circumference, or over 4 feet in diameter. Nobody seems to know the age of this tree, but it probably was planted 75 or more years ago.
