ROCHESTER - Workmen employed by D.A. Pike, owner of the Akron sawmill, succeeded in felling the largest tree in this vicinity, a tall straight oak which reared its branches far above its neighbors on the Herbert Harter farm, northwest of Akron. It is claimed that with the cutting of this wooden giant came the fall of the second largest oak in northern Indiana.

The tree at the bottom measured 6 feet in diameter, and at the place where the cutters' saws ate their way through, measured 15 feet in circumference and approximately 5 feet in diameter.
