Three old cronies, all past four score years, but still ambitious and able to labor, are cutting an oats field on Prospect Hill, this city, using a grain cradle much to the astonishment and admiration of the present generation, which gathers there to look on at the old-time, harvesting methods. William Pfeiffer, 82, Allen Cook, 81, and William Hoffman, 81, all neighbors of the South Union Street neighborhood and all old friends, are cutting, raking and binding the oats in the skillful manner, which 60 to 70 years ago was superseded by the invention of the modern harvesting machinery. It takes a skillful handler to manipulate the cradle or scythe and lay low the ripening oats in even and regular rows but these three, despite the heat, are enjoying the work.
