    More than 80 runners battled the 90-degree heat and participated in the 14th Annual Pioneer Days Road Race.

The overall champion for the men's division was Steve Hamme, who won the 2-mile race with a time of 9:40. Elizabeth Irvine was the overall women's champion, as she defended her title with a time of 12:50.

    Mrs. Nora Gross, Warsaw, lifelong resident of the area, celebrated her 83rd birthday Sunday at a surprise party at the Holiday Inn. Four generations of the Gross family came from Marion, Ohio, to participate in the celebration.

    Susann Knoop, Claypool High School senior, has captured second place in the girls' division of a district 4-H club junior leadership contest sponsored by the Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce, it was announced by Miss Marjorie Moore, county home demonstration agent.

July 18 1923

    Lawrence Scheerer, local grocer, put his hand into a fresh bunch of bananas he had just hung up in his store when he touched a hairy substance. Sheerer jumped and so did a tarantula. The grocer jumped the farthest and escaped the deadly bite of the spider, which is one of the largest ever found in bananas shipped here.
