    Kay J. Blalock, a graduate student in history at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, took second place at UAB's Seventh Annual Graduate Student Humanistic and Behavioral Research Competition.

Blalock, daughter of Richard and Betty Hinton, North Webster, earned her degree in history from UAB in 1986.

    The Kosciusko Community YMCA swim team competed in the Firecracker Open meet sponsored by the Manchester Aquatic Club over the weekend, and several individuals faired well in the 10-team affair.

Diana Williams took three first places and cracked three pool records. Other swimmers setting pool records in first place efforts were Jenny Marriott, Mike Garrard, Danny Eckert, Chris Marriott, Kathy Haack and Steve Franklin.

    Now showing at Centennial Theater is "Colorado Territory," starring Joel McCrea and Virginia Mayo; "Frontier Pony Express," "Close-Up" and "Unknown Island" at Strand Theater; and "Sorrowful Jones," starring Bob Hope and Lucille Ball, at Lake Theater.

    About 75 members of the Boys Club enjoyed the kite flying contest on Friday morning. Lewallen Border won the prize for the smallest kite that would fly and Reuben Williams won prizes for the largest kite and also for the kite that would go the highest. About 10 entered in the contest.

July 16 10 Years Ago Warsaw's Loren Dairymple recently placed second in the Junior Olympic Great Lakes Regional Roller Skating Championships conducted in Canton, Mich. The 16-year-old, the son of Sherrylynn Dairymple, competed in the Level 1 competition of the men's freestyle. With his second-place finish he earned the right to participate in the U.S. National Junior Olympic Championship, which will be held at Fayetteville, N.C., over Labor Day weekend. 25 Years Ago Clair F. Miller II, Winona Lake, has graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine and will begin an internship at Miriam Hospital, Providence, R.I. Dr. Miller was one of 246 new physicians to graduate this year from the I.U. School of Medicine, the largest medical school in the United States. 50 Years Ago Jane Ann Warner, Monroe Township, and Everett Rookstool, Beaver Dam, have captured trophies as the healthiest 4-H club girl and boy in Kosciusko county, it was announced Friday by the county Extension office. Warner is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Warner, and Rookstool is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett M. Rookstool. 75 Years Ago Dr. Eldon Hurd, who recently graduated from the Indiana Dental College, Indianapolis, has purchased the dental parlors and business of Dr. Leonard, Pierceton, and will take possession tomorrow.
