    Interviews held by the town board during an earlier executive session Wednesday night resulted in Bourbon resident Terry L. Clemens being sworn in as the newest member of the town's police department. Clemens, 27, is the son of Sam and LouAnn Clements of Argos, and a graduate of Argos High School. He and his wife, Julie, are the parents of a daughter, Betheny.

    Miss JoAnn B. Merkle is among 95 Goshen College students who are spending 14 weeks of study and field work in Central America and the Caribbean. Miss Merkle, a Goshen College senior, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Merkle, Route 2, Claypool. A 1967 graduate of Warsaw Community High School, she is in El Salvador for the winter trimester.

    Medals for outstanding work in gardening last year have been awarded to Richard Sparrow, Atwood, and John Swartz, of near Warsaw, by the National Garden Institute, it was announced Thursday by Cliff Breeden, assistant county agent.

    Claypool can boast of having within her midst as a citizen one of the oldest employees of the Nickel Plate Railroad. J.F. Newby (Doc) has been an employee for the past 41 years. He began with the first construction gang to use the pick and shovel and following the completion of the road was the first target watchman at the crossing.
