    Kosciusko County's Board of Health chose its new health officer yesterday.

Dr. William L. Remington Jr. will replace Dr. David Haines as county health officer. His four-year term will begin officially on Feb. 1.

    The first baby of 1979, Rusta Renee, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hackworth, 751 W. Market St., Warsaw, at 2:48 a.m. Monday at Kosciusko Community Hospital.

    Jack Laurien, son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Laurien, Winona Lake, has been promoted to cadet major in the Indiana University air Force ROTC, it was announced by Col. Hall King, commanding officer.

Upon completion of his college training, Laurien will be eligible for a commission in the air force reserve.

    Preparations have been made by Ernest Clase, of the Warsaw Ice Co., to begin the work of cutting and packing ice from Center and Pike lakes as soon as it reaches a depth of from 7-1/2 to 8 inches. The ice now is from 4 to 5 inches thick. With continued cold weather, ice packing should begin in a few days.
